Why Ecommerce SEO Fails
Your Store Runs Ads. Google Doesn't Trust It.
Most ecommerce sites look great and convert reasonably well — but they're invisible to organic search. Not because of bad content. Because of structural problems that no amount of blogging fixes: duplicate product URLs, thin collection pages, Core Web Vitals dragged down by app scripts, and zero topical authority in any product category.
Of all ecommerce traffic comes from organic search — yet most stores invest less than 10% of their marketing budget there.
Of Shopify stores have significant duplicate content issues from product variants and faceted filters — most owners have no idea.
Average revenue return per dollar spent on ecommerce SEO versus $2.50 for paid social — over a 24-month window.
What I Build
Ecommerce SEO as a Full Revenue Stack.
Three systems that compound on each other. Each is necessary. None works in isolation.
Product & Collection Architecture
Make every page earn its place.
I restructure your product hierarchy from the ground up — collection pages built with real topical depth, product pages with full specifications and structured data, and an internal link system that channels authority from homepage to category to product. No orphaned pages. No thin collections. No crawl budget wasted on dead URLs.
Technical Ecommerce SEO
Fix the structural problems stores ignore.
Variant URL canonicalisation. Faceted navigation control. Pagination handling. Sitemap architecture. Core Web Vitals optimisation across product templates. Schema markup for Product, Offer, Review, and AggregateRating. The technical layer is what separates stores that rank from stores that don't — and most stores have never had it properly built.
Ecommerce Content Engine
Topical authority that closes sales.
Buying guides, ingredient-level explainers, comparison content, and "best of" pages that capture commercial-intent searches above your product pages. Not generic blogs — strategic content that ranks for high-value queries, pre-qualifies buyers, and increases average order value by the time they reach the product page.
Shopify Plus SEO
Shopify Plus Is Powerful.
Out of the Box, Its SEO Is Broken.
Shopify Plus gives you more surface area to work with than standard Shopify — but it doesn't fix the architectural problems that come with the platform by default. Here's exactly what I address.
Problem 01
Variant URL Duplication at Scale
Every product variant generates its own indexable URL. A store with 200 products and 5 variants each has 1,000 near-identical URLs competing against each other. Google splits its attention across all of them — none rank.
Fix: Canonical tags + variant consolidation strategyProblem 02
Faceted Navigation Chaos
Filter combinations create thousands of crawlable, low-value pages. Google wastes crawl budget on them instead of your product pages. Many stores have more filter URLs indexed than actual products.
Fix: Robots.txt + canonical strategy + crawl budget redirectionProblem 03
Shallow Collection Pages
Default Shopify collection pages are just grids of products with a title and a short description. Google treats them as thin pages — and they are. The highest-value commercial keywords land on collection pages. Thin collections mean no rankings for your biggest opportunities.
Fix: Collection content architecture + topical depth build-outProblem 04
App Bloat & Core Web Vitals Collapse
Every installed Shopify app adds JavaScript to your storefront. Ten apps = ten extra scripts loading on every page. Most Shopify Plus stores score in the 30–55 range on PageSpeed Insights. A one-second delay costs 7% of conversions and hurts rankings simultaneously.
Fix: Script audit + lazy loading + theme performance optimisationProblem 05
Missing Product Schema
Shopify auto-generates basic Product schema — but skips the high-value fields: AggregateRating, Review, priceValidUntil. Google uses these for rich results — star ratings and price badges in search that visibly increase click-through rates.
Fix: Full Product + Offer + Review schema via theme or metafieldsProblem 06
International Markets Without hreflang
Shopify Plus Markets lets you sell to multiple countries in multiple currencies. Without proper hreflang implementation, your UK store shows up in US search results and vice versa — or both versions compete for the same global rankings.
Fix: Markets hreflang implementation + geo-targeted indexing strategyPlatforms I Work With
The Strategy Is Platform-Agnostic.
The Execution Is Not.
Every platform has its own specific SEO problems. I work across all of them — with a technical approach tailored to each platform's constraints and opportunities.
Shopify Plus
Full technical SEO, variant canonicalisation, Markets hreflang, theme performance, Liquid-level schema, headless Shopify (Next.js / Hydrogen) setups.
Shopify (Standard)
Same structural approach with workarounds for platform limitations. App-level solutions where theme access is restricted. Full product and collection architecture.
WooCommerce
Yoast/RankMath configuration, slug architecture, database query optimisation, WordPress performance stack, Core Web Vitals via hosting + caching layer.
Headless / Custom
Next.js, Remix, or custom storefronts with Shopify or Contentful backends. Server-side rendering SEO, metadata management, dynamic sitemap generation.
The Process
Four Phases to Organic Revenue.
Phase 01
Ecommerce Technical Audit
A full diagnostic of your store's crawl architecture, indexation status, duplicate content exposure, Core Web Vitals, schema coverage, and internal link flow. I quantify every leak — what it's costing you in missed rankings and what fixing it is worth in additional organic revenue. You get a prioritised action plan, not a long list of generic recommendations.
Phase 02
Architecture & Structure
We rebuild the foundation: canonical structure, sitemap architecture, internal linking from homepage to collection to product, breadcrumb schema, and Core Web Vitals fixes across your product and collection templates. This is the layer that determines whether every piece of content you add in phase 3 actually ranks.
Phase 03
Collection & Product Authority
We build topical depth into your highest-value collections and products. Buying guides and comparison content that captures pre-purchase queries. Product page depth that answers every question a buyer has before they need to contact support. A content hub that compounds — articles that rank, acquire links, and flow authority back down to your product pages.
Phase 04
Revenue Attribution & Compounding
Every organic visitor is tracked from landing page through checkout — not just sessions, but revenue per page, assisted conversions, and organic vs paid revenue split. Monthly reporting gives you the exact number: what SEO earned this month versus last month, and where the next highest-leverage opportunity sits.
