SEO Marketing for Law Firms Built Around How Clients Search.

SEO marketing for law firms works when each practice area and city has its own page that answers what a client is searching for, backed by a Google Business Profile and a site that earns trust. I help California firms build that, and I tell you plainly what SEO can and can't promise.

The Problem

Your Firm's Name Isn't How Clients Search.

People who already know your firm search for your name. Most new clients don't know it yet. They search for a practice area and a place, then pick from whatever shows up.

On many law firm sites, a single Practice Areas page is expected to answer every one of those searches, and directory profiles can outrank the firm's own site. The firm is paying for a website that isn't really in the running.

What's Different

What Makes SEO Marketing for Law Firms Different.

Searches are local and specific. Clients look for a practice area plus a city or “near me,” so the map results and your local pages matter more than a national ranking.
One page per practice area. A single page listing every service can't answer each search. Each practice area, and each major city you serve, needs its own page with real content.
Trust is the product. Legal advice is a topic where search engines look hard at who is behind the content. Attorney bios, bar admissions and honest claims count for more than keyword tricks.
The map listing has rules. Google's guidelines say a virtual office isn't eligible for a Business Profile, and lawyers are treated as individual practitioners. Setting it up wrong can get a listing suspended.
Intake decides whether a ranking pays. A call that reaches voicemail, or a form answered the next day, is a lost enquiry. Reply speed matters as much as position.

California Advertising Rules

Marketing That Respects the State Bar Rules.

A California law firm's website is a lawyer communication, so the State Bar's advertising rules apply to it. Rule 7.1 says a lawyer may not make a false or misleading communication about the lawyer or the lawyer's services, and a communication is misleading if it contains a material misrepresentation of fact or law, or leaves out a fact needed to keep the message from misleading as a whole. Rule 7.2 allows advertising through written, recorded or electronic means, subject to Rules 7.1 and 7.3.

That shapes SEO content. Claims about results, testimonials, “best lawyer” language and guarantees all have to pass that test. I write pages that describe what the firm does and how it works, and I flag anything that should be reviewed by your ethics counsel before it goes live.

I'm a marketing consultant, not a lawyer, and nothing on this page is legal advice. Your firm is responsible for what it publishes.

How It Works

How SEO Marketing for Law Firms Works.

It starts with a free audit. I look at how your site and Google listing appear for your practice areas and city, and send back the biggest gaps I can see.

If you want to go ahead, we agree which practice areas and cities come first. I draft each page for your review. Anything that makes a claim about your results or experience needs your confirmation before it's published.

After launch I report on whether pages are indexed, how many calls and forms come from search, and what to do next. That's the evidence that the work is paying off, long before rankings settle.

Pricing

SEO Marketing for Law Firms Pricing, Quoted in Writing.

The cost depends on how many practice areas and cities you want covered, the condition of your current site, and whether you want pages written, built, or both. You get a quote in writing after the free audit, before any work starts.

I don't guarantee rankings or cases. Nobody can, and a promise of the number one position is a promise about something Google controls. If you only want the technical review, see the technical SEO audit service.

  • An agency promised page one in 30 days, and you want a straight answer instead

SEO Marketing for Law Firms: Questions.

It's the work of making a firm's website and Google listings show up when people search for a lawyer. That means a page for each practice area and city you serve, a correct Google Business Profile, trust signals such as attorney bios, and a technically sound site. Success is measured in calls and enquiries, not rankings alone.
The fundamentals are the same. The differences are that searches are local and specific, trust and accuracy carry extra weight for legal topics, advertising rules limit what you can claim, and a ranking only pays if intake answers the call or form quickly.
Yes. Clients usually search for a lawyer by practice area and place, so local results and an accurate Google Business Profile are often where the first call comes from. Google requires a real, staffed location: a rented mailing address or virtual office isn't eligible for a Business Profile.
It depends on how many practice areas and cities you want covered, the condition of your current site, and whether you want pages written, built, or both. I quote in writing after the free audit and before any work starts, so you're paying for your firm's situation and not for an average.
Months, not weeks. A new page has to be found and indexed before it can earn trust, and your competitors have been building for years. Anyone who promises a date for page one is guessing. I report on indexing and enquiries along the way so you can see progress before rankings move.
Ask for a sample report. Ask who actually does the work. Ask whether they report calls and enquiries or only rankings. Ask who owns your website, Google Business Profile and analytics accounts when the work ends. And treat any guarantee of rankings or cases as a warning sign, since nobody controls Google.
Your website is a lawyer communication, and Rule 7.1 says a lawyer may not make a false or misleading communication about their services. Claims about results, testimonials, rankings and guarantees all have to pass that test. I write pages that describe what the firm does and how, and I flag anything that should be reviewed by your ethics counsel. I'm not a lawyer, and this isn't legal advice.
No. Nobody can guarantee a ranking, and a guarantee of cases would be a claim you couldn't support. What I can promise is clear reporting and honest advice about what's realistic for your practice area and city.
The process is the same for any practice area, but competition isn't. Some areas, personal injury in particular, tend to be far more competitive than others, and that changes what's realistic and how long it takes. The free audit will tell you where your practice area stands.
